Welcome Week 2019
On Sunday, August 25th, the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center was full. Packed, even. With five minutes to go before Mass, students and parents "scooted" closer together to make room for those coming in from the rain outside. At 10AM, the schola began singing "Praise to the Lord" and Fr. Meyer processed down the aisle to begin our Welcome Weekend Mass.
A Huge Week for undCATHOLIC.
The first week that a student is on campus presents a great opportunity to invite them into the life of the Church. As Madeline, one of our FOCUS missionaries, put it: "Our hearts are always looking for more." That more is always, ultimately, Christ Himself. And we at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center try to lead every student to Him.
So Much To Do
For this reason, Welcome Week is packed with activities. After Mass on Sunday, the Knights of Columbus grilled cheeseburgers for lunch, and over 80 students stayed to eat. On Monday, nearly 100 students followed the wafting smell of taco meat to our social hall for dinner and a game night.
Five Days of Fellowship
On Tuesday, undCatholic took over University Park to play ultimate frisbee. On Wednesday, Fr. Meyer said Mass and blessed the brains of all students present. Thursday night, saw a beautiful sunset and BBQ on the Newman Center lawn. And on Friday, our Student Leaders hosted a street dance in the parking lot.
The View From Father's Office
Fr. Luke was behind the grill for Thursday's BBQ. He captured the scene as the grill billowed smoke and over 90 UND students ate and talked on the lawn.
Want to support undCatholic? There is an easy way to do that. We made a little video to explain.
Final Notes
  • The campus of UND had a strange visitor two weeks ago: a moose. The moose in question wandered into Memorial Stadium and spent the day, while a perplexed police force came up with an extraction plan. We at undCatholic called Sts. Francis and Hubertus. They had radically different ideas for dealing with the moose.
  • It seems St. Francis won the debate
  • As our FOCUS missionaries begin their bible studies, please keep those attending in your prayers. It is hard to live the faith on a college campus, and these men and women will face many trials over the next year.
  • Thanks to all who have responded to our Fall Appeal Letter. We are continually humbled by the tireless support we receive from each of you.
  • Yesterday was the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Please pray for the souls of all those who lost their lives. And that the Virgin Mary might intercede in a special way for all those who mourn them, especially parents mourning their children. As always, “Let us beg the Lord that the spiral of hatred and violence will not prevail.”
  • That last quotation is from St. John Paul II's papal audience on September 12th, 2001 -- 18 years ago today.
